Foreman, M. (1993). War game. New York, NY: Arcade Publishing. ISBN: 1-55970-242-7.
Genre: Historical Fiction
Grade Level: 5-8
Summary: This book is based off of what has been titled “The Christmas Truce”, which occurred on the battlefields of WWI in 1914. English and German soldiers came together in no man’s land and played a game of soccer together while they honored a temporary truce for Christmas. The book follows the lives of four young soldiers, who realize that the War is not as glorious as they thought. They are excited to play a game of soccer during the Christmas Truce, and this allows them a brief escape from the bitter life of trench warfare. Upon returning to the trenches after the truce ends, all four of the young soldiers die while still thinking about the peace that occurred while they played soccer together.
Activity: Throughout this book, numerous propaganda posters from WWI are shown. Have students create their own original propaganda poster modeled off of the ones featured in the book. These posters should be easily readable and the message should make perfect sense upon a quick glance. If students are stuck, show them some more examples of WWI propaganda posters located here: http://www.learnnc.org/lp/editions/ww1posters
Have students present their poster to the class and have them explain why they decided to decorate their poster in the way that they did. What message were they trying to convey? Why did the idea they focused on stand out to them?
Activity Inspired by Mr. Duncan Memory’s English II class at West Forsyth High School.
