Kemp, J., & Walters, C. (2007). I very really miss you. London: Frances Lincoln Children's Books. ISBN: 978-1-84507-260-5
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Grade Level: K-2
Summary: Sam’s big brother, Ben, leaves to go on a trip for a week. At first, Sam is excited because he can have fun with all of the toys by himself. As the week progresses, Sam begins to miss Ben. To deal with Ben's absence, Sam writes him a letter telling him how much he is missed. On the day Ben gets back, Sam rushes to see him and both brothers realize how much they really missed each other.
Activity: Often, students miss family members or friends during the course of the school day. After reading this book, discuss the content of the book with students. Do any students have siblings who have gone away on a trip? Do they miss being with their grandparents/ parents/ guardians throughout the school day? Have they ever been on a trip without a sibling and how did that make them feel? What were some of the ways students coped with missing someone?
As a way to cope with his sadness, Sam wrote Ben a postcard. Have students write postcards to someone that they miss, and allow them to decorate the front with pictures or stickers. It would be good to use 5x7 index cards for this activity, so students can have a lined side to write on and a blank side to decorate. Students can then take these postcards and give them to the person they miss.
